I was 10 years old. My family was returning from a vacation to our home on the northwest side. It was very late at night and the streets were empty except for big trucks of soldiers traveling toward Downtown. There was no other evidence of the upheaval that had taken place elsewhere in the city. Almost immediately thereafter, the "For Sale" signs sprouted. Within two years, almost all the white people in my neighborhood were gone.
