In 1967, I was pregnant with my first child. I lived on Detroit's west side in a third floor apartment on Gladstone Street. The building was located between Dexter Ave. and Wildermere Street. I remember seeing army tanks roll down the streets. I witnessed a man being shot by a woman as he ran for his life. This happened right after the riots. He was shot with a rifle in the front of two small children who stood next to the woman who fired the shots. About a dozen policemen responded to the call. The woman (who lived next door) did not flee and readily admitted to the shooting.

My sister and her familly lived on the next street, Hazelwood, located between Lawton and Wildermere. There was shooting at the apartment building on the corner of Lawton. She said the police arrived and shot out the street light. Her young son and daughter were outside playing. She was frightened. She told her husband, "You get our son. I'll get our daughter." She said the sprinkler was on, but they were too afraid to go out and turn it off. The water ran all night long!.
