I was a 14 year old student at Teal School of Music. My mother would drive me down wait for me in the lobby during my lesson and we would drive home. On this one Saturday in July of 1967, we left the school to get on I-94 and travel home. My mother was stopped by a red light before she could make the left turn. A large group of African-American men where on either side of the corner. Under her breath, my mother said "Lock your door." I did as she said and that large group of men started to throw rocks at the car. When they charged the car, my mother took off making an illegal left turn and ran some more red lights to get on I-94. I asked her why those men were so angry at us, we did nothing. She said she really didn't know. We never spoke of the incident again. The next week, Teal School of Music called and said not to come in for lessons The riots had started.
