1967 was my summer between 9th and 10th grade. I was a Red Cross volunteer at a Head Start program at St. Cecilia School, near Grand River and Livernois. We had a week off for the riots, On the following Monday, I was the only white person on the Grand River bus, going from Greenfield to Livernois. People seemed to look at me with sympathy or curiosity. Later in the week, we took the little students on a neighborhood walk and they said, "Hi, policeman!" to the remaining National Guard personnel, still stationed on the street corners. Life goes on…
