Harriet Berg and her husband were not in Detroit in July 1967. They had rented their home to a young attorney from New York City who was considering a job with a Detroit law firm. During the unrest, he and his family left the city abruptly, leaving the house open. The basement flooded without a tenant to take care of it. Harriet recalls, “Needless to say, he … decided not to come to live in Detroit after all”.

We received a telegram from a friend and his wife who rented our home in Detroit for the summer of 1967 telling us he was he was leaving. He was a young lawyer from NYC considering a job with a Detroit law firm, interested in coming to U of D to teach and live with his wife and child. On the night of the riot, he left abruptly leaving the house open. The basement flooded which we were unaware of. Needless to say he fled and decided not to come to live in Detroit after all.
