Darren Hood

Darren Hood

I was 6-years-old during the riot. Only being a few blocks or so away from what I now consider to be the center of activity, just near West Grand Boulevard and Grand River, I remember my mother making sure that we stayed indoors for the most part, though I had no idea what was happening. I remember people going up and down our street carrying items they had stolen while looting stores and bragging about it. My most vivid memory was walking to Peppy's Hamburgers and seeing Grand River lined with tanks and loads of armed forces personnel. As a child, I was quite petrified, as I didn't know who they were or what they were doing. I just remember how serious everything appeared. Thankfully, they were inactive as we went to get our food.
